The novel is set on Shearwater Island, a remote, storm-lashed isle near Antarctica that houses the world’s largest seed vault.  As sea levels rise due to climate change, the island is slowly being swallowed by the ocean. Dominic Salt and his three children (Raff, Fen, and Orly) are the island’s final inhabitants, serving as caretakers for the seeds until they can be evacuated. During a massive storm, a woman named Rowan Jones washes ashore. While the Salts nurse her back to health, tensions rise as Rowan discovers sabotaged radios and a freshly dug grave, realizing that both she and the family are harboring dangerous secrets.
