It is a coming-of-age story, a murder mystery, and a celebration of the natural world, all wrapped in a Southern Gothic atmosphere. The novel follows the life of Kya Clark, often known by the locals of Barkley Cove, North Carolina, as the “Marsh Girl.” In 1952, at just six years old, Kya is abandoned by her family and forced to raise herself in the isolation of the coastal marshes. She learns to survive entirely on her own, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. As she grows, she develops a deep connection to nature, becoming an expert on the local flora and fauna.
