The novel combines elements of Greek tragedy, dark academia, and suspense to tell a story about murder, cults, and the secretive world of an elite university. The story follows Mariana Andros, a group therapist who is deeply traumatized by the recent accidental drowning of her husband, Sebastian. She receives a frantic phone call from her niece, Zoe, whose best friend has been found murdered on the grounds of the fictional St. Christopher’s College, part of Cambridge University. Mariana rushes to the university, a place that holds her own fond but painful memories. She quickly realizes there is a sinister atmosphere surrounding a secret society of female students known as “The Maidens”. This exclusive group is led by the charismatic and manipulative Greek tragedy professor, Professor Edward Fosca, whom the young women idolize almost to the point of a cult. When a second body is found, Mariana becomes convinced that the murderer is the professor. However, as she delves deeper into the campus’s secrets and the tangled lives of the students, she realizes that the truth is far more complex and dangerous than she initially imagined.
