The story begins with a troubled Inspector Harry Hole in self-imposed exile in an opium den in Hong Kong. He is tracked down by a young Norwegian police officer, Kaja Solness, and reluctantly persuaded to return to Oslo because a serial killer is at work, and Harry is considered the only specialist with the skills to find them. Harry must navigate police politics and his own personal demons—including his relationship with his dying father and his lingering love for his ex-girlfriend, Rakel—as he is drawn into the case.
