The invisible Life of Addie Larue

Book follows a young woman in 18th-century France who makes a Faustian bargain to live forever, only to be cursed with being forgotten by everyone she meets. The narrative alternates between Addie’s past, beginning in 1714 France, and her present life in 2014 New York City. To escape an unwanted marriage, Adeline LaRue prays to the “gods that answer after dark”. A shadowy entity she calls Luc grants her immortality but ensures she can never leave a mark on the world; people forget her the moment she leaves their sight, and she cannot write or draw her own name.  After 300 years of solitude, Addie meets Henry Strauss, a bookstore clerk who utters the life-changing words: “I remember you”.  Although Addie cannot create art herself, she survives through history as a “muse,” inspiring artists to create works that capture her essence without knowing who she is.
