The story is narrated by Starr Carter, a sixteen-year-old Black girl who lives in the fictional, predominantly Black, low-income neighborhood of Garden Heights, but attends a wealthy, mostly white prep school, Williamson. Starr constantly switches between two worlds, feeling like she doesn’t fully belong in either. Her life changes forever when she is the sole witness to the fatal shooting of her unarmed childhood best friend, Khalil Harris, by a white police officer during a traffic stop. Khalil was reaching for a hairbrush, not a weapon. As news of the shooting spreads and protests and riots erupt in Garden Heights, Starr is thrust into the public eye. She must navigate intense pressure from police, local drug lords, activists, and her own community. The core conflict is whether Starr will remain silent to protect her safety and her family, or speak her truth to ensure justice for Khalil and challenge the systemic racism she encounters daily.
