The story follows Elsie Hannaway, a brilliant adjunct professor of theoretical physics who works multiple low-paying jobs to survive. She also has a secret side hustle: acting as a fake girlfriend for people who need a date, using a dating app with coded rules and emotional boundaries. Her two worlds collide when she meets the “broody and infuriatingly handsome” older brother of her favorite client: Jack Smith. Jack is a well-respected experimental physicist at Harvard who publicly published a scathing review that essentially destroyed the career of Elsie’s former mentor.
