Set in the meticulously planned 1990s suburb of Shaker Heights, Ohio, it explores the collision between a “picture-perfect” family and a nomadic mother-daughter duo. The Richardsons: Led by Elena Richardson, a local journalist who lives by the rules and prizes order above all else. The Warrens: Mia, an enigmatic artist and single mother, and her teenage daughter Pearl, who rent a house from the Richardsons. Tensions ignite when the families find themselves on opposing sides of a contentious custody battle over a Chinese-American baby. This leads Elena on an obsessive quest to uncover Mia’s secretive past, eventually leading to a literal and metaphorical conflagration.
