First book in the Emily Wilde trilogy.  Set in the early 20th century (1909), the story follows Emily Wilde, a brilliant but socially awkward Cambridge professor and “dryadologist” (a scholar of faeries). Emily travels to the remote, snowy Scandinavian village of Hrafnsvik to conduct field research on a mysterious and dangerous species of fae known as the Hidden Ones. Her research is complicated by the arrival of her academic rival and “best friend,” Wendell Bambleby. Unlike Emily, Wendell is charming, lazy, and beloved by the locals—but he carries mysterious secrets of his own. As Emily uncovers the secrets of the Hidden Ones, she becomes a “faerie detective” to save villagers taken by high faeries into their perilous otherworld.
