It is the third book in the six-volume Dune saga and follows the events of Dune and Dune Messiah. This installment focuses on the generation after Paul Atreides and the intense political and ecological struggles for control of the desert planet Arrakis. The story takes place nine years after Emperor Paul Atreides blinded himself and walked into the desert, as is the custom for the Fremen when they lose their sight or power. His twin children, Leto II and Ghanima (descendants of the Atreides and Harkonnen bloodlines), are still young children, but like their aunt Alia, they are “Pre-born” and possess the full, adult consciousnesses of their ancestors within them.
